History

Amiskwaciy Academy is an Edmonton Public School program of choice that provides solid academic programming within an Aboriginal context. Open to students of all backgrounds, we believe in the potential of each and every student; Amiskwaciy is the Cree word for Beaver Hills as the Cree used to call the Edmonton area “Beaver Hills House.” The school name was chosen in consultation with Elders from the Aboriginal community. At Amiskwaciy Academy students have the opportunity to participate in traditional ceremonies, rites of passage, and indigenous arts. There is spiritual guidance in the form of sweat lodge ceremonies, Sweet Grass purification, and daily drumming and singing with Cree to the Creator.

The school’s Logo was decided upon by the school’s founding Elders. It reflects the traditional beliefs of the medicine wheel.

In the North is the Buffalo, the Elders, the air,
the colour white and the winter; this part of
the medicine wheel represents Spiritual well
being.

The Animal spirit is the buffalo,
(meaning the endurance and
survival of the people).

In the West are the
Eagle feathers, the
adult, water, the colour
blue and the fall; this is
the part of the medicine
wheel representing
emotional well being.
The Animal spirit is the
bear, (strength
courage).
In the East is the Eagle,
babies, the sun, the colour
yellow and the spring; this
is the part of the medicine
wheel representing
physical well being.
The Animal spirit is the
eagle, (vision, wisdom).

In the South is the Métis flag and sash, youth,
water, the colour red and the summer; this
part of the medicine wheel representing
mental well being.

The Animal spirit is the coyote, (curiosity).
Sometimes represented by the mouse,
indicating the unlimited energy of youth.
